Dreams (the sequel)

“We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand.”

-Randy Pausch, The Last Lecture

Poppi wrote to you many years ago about dreams. He wrote to you, encouraging you to live your life in constant pursuit of your dreams. He wrote about taking time to dream and then making your dreams come true. Specifically, he cited a famous professor from Carnegie-Mellon University who gave a “Last Lecture” about “Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams” that made a profound impact on him and Poppi wanted to pass some of that impact on to you.

There is a lot of wisdom in that lecture. I’ve watched it multiple times, and I learn more each time I see it. Some tidbits I’ve taken:

“When you’re screwing up and nobody says anything to you anymore that means they’ve given up on you… you may not want to hear it but your critics are often the ones telling you they still love you and care about you and want to make you better.”

“You just have to decide if you’re a Tigger or an Eeyore.”

“Be good at something; it makes you valuable.”

“The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough. They’re there to stop the other people.”

In the end, we discover a secret about the talk about dreams. Professor Pausch gives away what his lecture was really all about:

“It’s not about how to achieve your dreams, it’s about how to lead your life, … If you lead your life the right way, the karma will take care of itself, the dreams will come to you.”
